The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is a UK registered non-profit organization working internationally to protect natural environments and the human rights of people who depend on them. EJF is working in Indonesia to end illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels and actively promote improvements to policy making, corporate governance and management of fisheries.
EJF is seeking to employ a fulltime ‘advocacy officer’ in Indonesia to work alongside EJF’s Indonesia campaigners in driving key legislative and regulatory reforms to effectively combat IUU fishing and human rights abuses whilst also improving fisheries transparency.
This position will involve coordinating with and engaging in meetings with senior Government of Indonesia officials and agencies to drive forward EJF’s advocacy goals, tracking and reviewing relevant policy developments, preparing gap analysis briefings for internal and/or public use, supporting specific research on environmental crimes and related human right issues and contributing to the overall strategy, planning, development and implementation of EJF’s campaigns in Indonesia.
Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently and be confident in liaising with government agencies, fishing and seafood companies, fisheries unions and other related stakeholders. They should also be adept at conducting research and writing policy briefings, public speaking including at high-profile meetings. Candidates should also be prepared to travel within Indonesia, potentially at short notice. Please note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic this position is subject to change.

Type of appointment: Full-term position with an initial 6-month probation period. Remuneration: Depending on experience
Essential skills and experience:
Native Bahasa Indonesian speaker
Professional proficiency in English
Minimum three years working in any relevant sector and/or position (fisheries, advocacy, human rights, policy and research)
Experienced in conducting advocacy and lobbying national government agencies
A degree in any relevant discipline (environmental law, environmental policy and social science)
Relevant work experience (NGOs, researcher, governments, private sector, etc)
Demonstrable experience forming and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders
Strong communication, excellent data analysis, research and writing skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc) and internet-based storage formats (google drive, google docs, excel sheet, etc)
Desirable skills and experience:
A higher degree in a relevant discipline
Ability to work independently
Existing networks with government agencies, private sectors, NGOs and related stakeholders
Experienced writing review/gap analysis of Indonesia policies and related international conventions
