[Environmental Justice Foundation] : Indonesia Translator

he Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is a UK-registered non-profit organization working internationally to protect natural environments and the human rights of people who depend on them.

EJF is working in Indonesia to end illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels and actively promote improvements to policymaking, corporate governance and management of fisheries.

EJF is seeking to employ a part-time ‘Indonesia translator’ in Indonesia to work alongside EJF’s campaigners in pursuing these objectives.

This position will involve coordinating with EJF campaigners in Indonesia to drive forward EJF’s campaign goals, transcribing interview audio into documents with a high standard for accuracy and conciseness, and supporting research on environmental crimes and human rights issues.

Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently and be confident in analysing and translating conversations related to environmental issues and/or human rights issues. They will be adept at conducting administrative tasks related to online data collection and storage and should be adept at using Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.

  • Post Title: Indonesia translator

  • Type of appointment: Part-time position with at least 2 working days allocation time per week

  • Remuneration: Based on experience

  • Location: Remote


This position is open to Indonesian citizens only.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Native Bahasa Indonesian speaker

  • Professional proficiency in English

  • Experienced in translating or transcribing documents or audio from Indonesian into English and vice versa

  • A degree in any relevant discipline (environmental law, environmental policy, social science, fisheries or marine sciences)

  • Relevant work experience (NGOs, researcher, governments, private sector, etc)

  • Strong communication, excellent data analysis, research and writing skills

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc) and internet-based storage formats (google drive, google docs, excel sheet, etc)

Desirable skills and experience:

  • A higher degree in a relevant discipline

  • Native “Ngapak” Javanese speaker

  • Ability to work independently

  • Existing networks with government agencies, private sectors, NGOs and related stakeholders
