Program Overview

As the country’s commitment to sustainable development steadily grows, WRI Indonesia seeks to catalyze the realization of the commitment through research in less explored but strategic areas. To generate rigorous and reliable knowledge products that are useful for decision-makers, WRI Indonesia needs to produce research products that consist of cutting-edge issues at the intersection of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. This not only is going to help WRI Indonesia to forge research tradition but also support WRI Indonesia's mission in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through applied science and actions-based research.

Job Summary

The Research Analyst will help in developing and managing research portfolios in multiple projects, such as the Indonesia Intact Rainforest Program (IIRP), IPLC (Indigenous People and Local Communities), and Phase II of Accelerating Low Emissions Development in Indonesia (NORWAY Phase II). This encompasses the whole phases of research project activities: conceptualization, planning, data gathering, and field verification, analysis, and writing. The person needs to work in close coordination with programmatic staff, including members of the regional team. You will have strong analytical skills, cross-disciplinary experience, and a passion for environment and development issues. This person can work with minimum supervision, is a team player, good communicator, and has a strong understanding of the issue developed.

Job Responsibilities

The Research Analyst will conduct several research-investigative projects related to programs in WRI Indonesia.

Below is the breakdown of the responsibilities of the Research Project Lead:

Research, Knowledge, and Publication (50%):

  • Act as the point person regarding research projects on Outcome 2 of NORWAY Phase II, IPLC, and IIRP. This includes project conceptualization, planning, implementation, analysis, and report writing

  • Work in a team to contribute to knowledge products and other communication documents (e.g., reports, briefs, data products, tools, blog) to raise the profile of WRI Indonesia’s works

  • Provide support to strengthen the quality of various research projects undertaken and/or coordinated by WRI Indonesia, especially in the Sumatra region

  • Respond to project needs and inquiries

  • Ensure that all knowledge products coming out from programs are designed to deliver actionable results 

  • Participate in discussions, meetings, conferences with key stakeholders.

  • Identify and engage with relevant partners at the national and subnational level, in coordination with the relevant program.

  • Utilize your creativity, research, and analysis skills to identify new opportunities.

Project Management (40%)

  • Analyzes and assists with project budget management and reports under minimum supervision

  • Keep track of past performance and lessons learned to use on future project preparation

  • Development of detailed project work plan, and monitor its progress in line with the project schedule

  • Co-manage changes to the project arrangement & timeline, ensuring its technical feasibility

  • Ensuring proper structure for deliverables, esp. for the dissemination process

  • Organizes internal and external meetings, workshops, conferences, and other dissemination activities

Engagements (10%)

  • Support engagement with the third party for meeting the project requirement e.g., data, technical discussion, dissemination

  • Co-lead local level engagement with stakeholders

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in forestry, agriculture, hydrology, international development, environmental science, public policy, political science, or other relevant fields.

  • University-based and/or professional research experience of a minimum of 2 years in natural resources-related fields.

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft product(s): word, excel, PowerPoint, notes, and similar app of other products and/or brands

  • Very strong writing and research skills, excellent academic performance, as well as a high level of organization and attention to detail.

  • Familiarity with or interest in Indonesian natural resources issues.

  • High integrity, passion for sustainable development, and a good sense of humor are preferred.

  • Able to travel to remote areas to do field investigation and stakeholders coordination.

  • Familiarity or proficiency in using GIS software is a plus.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and fluency in oral and written English and Bahasa Indonesia.

  • Legally able to work in Indonesia

  • Must be a self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized thinker with an ability to juggle multiple priorities, handle assignments independently, and work under tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of experience in conducting research with topics relevant to WRI Indonesia’s work

Performance Standard

  • Demonstrates understanding of program objectives and project alignment

  • Monitor program/project performance against contract requirements

    • Work plan and knowledge products are expected to be carried out in a timely, satisfactory fashion with minor supervision

    • Knowledge products produced show rigorous analytical content.

    • Fosters communication between team members and across programs

    • The capability of setting priorities, working under constraints, and managing several project activities simultaneously.

    • Well-coordinated and well-engaged within project and wider program execution.

    • Positively maintained relationship with external and internal stakeholders

    • Ability to work well in a group/team as well as working individually.

    • Ability & willingness to do business travel to meet project goals.

    • Must be able to multi-task and manage several project activities simultaneously.


Must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.

Final candidates might be required to take a writing test and to produce two writing samples when needed.
